The Diaphragm goes AUTOMATICALLY tight when stress comes in. This is a Nervous System Reflex called the Moro Reflex (also known as the Startle reflex, present at birth to help us to take our first breath.)
This is an automatic response. There’s nothing you can do initially to stop it if this is where your stress area is.
The diaphragm sits right in the center of the chest. Its a large thin muscle that spans from left to right ribcage, to the breast bone and to the spine. It’s one of our stongest muscles and sits right under the lungs, near the heart (hence why sometimes it may feel like you are having a heart attack, when it’s the diaphragm is so tight.) When the diaphragm is so tight, we feel we can’t breathe, making us feel more anxious and so the cycle begins that can lead to a panic attack.
Primitive Reflex Integration, can teach the diaphragm not to react so strongly to stress and anxiety can lift, calm will descend. Using a few movements no more than 2 minutes long, we can get the diaphragm to release tension and stop the cycle from even beginning.
Using Integration movements, a bit of stretching in yoga poses to release tension in the diaphragm, and some life coaching, anxiety can really become a thing of the past. This forms a mayor part of the work I do.
